Philippe Quint
In this course, multi-Grammy Award nominee American violinist Philippe Quint will explore Barber’s violin concerto. The three movements of this concerto are Allegro, Andante, and Presto in moto perpetuo. Quint explores Barber’s inspiration, the historical context, and the beauty and depth of one of the most beloved violin concertos. He shares his thoughts and ideas about the character, structure, and technical challenges the concerto presents.
I. Allegro
Quint discusses approaching the concerto, considering the historical background and Beethoven and Brahms' influence on Barber. He examines the first movement's structure, markings, and beautiful themes.
II. Andante
The second movement is an example of Barber’s inspiring lyrical writing. Quint guides us through the movement’s long lines and emotional journey. He explores the score and the connection to the orchestra.
III. Presto in moto perpetuo
The electric third movement is notorious for its technical difficulty. Quint shares his advice on mastering the bow stroke, practicing the fast passages, and finding patterns to help overcome the challenges in the movement.
