Shifting: from Beginner to Advanced

Taught by renowned cellist

tonebase Artists

Shifting is one of the great challenges of the cello due to the large nature of the fingerboard. In this course, we begin by learning about principles of shifting. We learn how to shift cleanly, ergonomically, and smoothly. We then use the seminal exercises of the great Louis Feulliard as we explore both his scalar shifting and his long-distance shifting exercises. We then look into how we can develop a variety of shifts, and finally, we learn about advanced shifting principles and high-level repertoire application.

Course Syllabus

Advanced Shifting Principles and Repertoire Application

In this lesson, special emphasis is placed on shifts of long distances over the cello fingerboard. Professor Greensmith believes it is important to make a mental photograph of the new position to really understand how it feels. He also conveys that when we make up exercises to suit the music we are playing, we have a much better chance of the passage going correctly. Another thing that is emphasized is the idea of practicing double stops in the position to which we are going, and not just the shift note itself.

Feulliard's Scalar Shifting

In this lesson, we learn about shifting by scale degree. Lelchuk emphasizes how crucial it is to plan shifts slowly and vibrate when possible to keep a loose and relaxed left hand.

Feulliard's Long Distance Shifting

In the second of the Feulliard shifting exercises in this book, we must learn to go longer distances on the cello. Lelchuk tells us the importance of hearing the note after the shift before physically shifting so that our ears can help train our hands. We also learn about releasing the arm weight and gradually gliding up the fingerboard.

Principles of Shifting

Shifting is one of the biggest challenges cellists face. Because of the very long distances of the cello fingerboard, learning how to move up and down the cello is of paramount importance. In this course, cellist Julian Schwarz takes a deep dive into the control of the left hand and explores the techniques required to make clean, accurate shifts to bring your playing to the next level.

Developing Variety in Shifts

In this lesson, we explore the many ways in which we can make slides, or portamenti, as cellists. We not only learn about the many physical ways in which slides can be executed, but we study the history of slides and learn about stylistic differences between composers. Sant'Ambrogio also teaches us about the importance of the down-slide, a musical expression of deep pathos that can make a huge emotional impact.
