Respected cellist and educator Astrid Schween has set a new standard of artistry and pedagogy. Beyond her soul-stirring performances and collaborations, she is influencing a new generation of cellists with her innovative, thoughtful approach to technique and musical expression.
Schween debuted at the age of 16 with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of conductor Zubin Mehta. Her connection to Mehta led to her private tutelage under Jacqueline DuPré in London. She went on to earn degrees from The Juilliard School and study with Leonard Rose, Harvey Shapiro, and Dr. H. T. Ma, among other esteemed mentors.
Schween would then embark on a versatile performing career — appearing in venues from Carnegie Hall to Wigmore Hall to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, collaborating with renowned orchestras and a diverse range of artists, and maintaining a robust schedule of solo concerts. She has appeared with such ensembles as the Juilliard String Quartet and the Lark Quartet, with whom she earned the Naumburg Chamber Music Award. She is a prolific recording artist, and in the summer of 2024, is slated to record the Chopin Sonata for tonebase with pianist Noreen Cassidy Polera.
Schween is an esteemed educator, holding a professorship in Cello at Juilliard. In the past, she has held faculty positions at the Perlman Music Program and the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
