Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1005

By

Johann Sebastian Bach

Bach's Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1005, is a masterpiece of the solo violin repertoire. Composed around 1720, it's the third sonata in a set of six, and was largely unrecognized until the early 19th century due to the championing of violinist Joseph Joachim. The sonata consists of four movements that highlight the violin's versatility and the composer's mastery of counterpoint and harmony. Bach's Violin Sonata No. 3 remains a cornerstone of classical violin literature, treasured for its enduring beauty and musical depth.

Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1005

by:

Vijay Gupta

Bach's third sonata for solo violin, BWV 1005 in C major, was composed in 1720 and is the last of the composer's solo violin sonatas (as part of the six sonatas and partitas). The four movements of the sonata: Adagio, Fugue, Largo, and Allegro assai, are considered some of Bach’s finest instrumental music. Acclaimed violinist Vijay Gupta demonstrates how to reveal the uniqueness, harmonic tension, and honesty of this work. In addition, Gupta discusses the technical issues in the piece and the solutions to them.
