Leone Buyse, a revered educator and accomplished soloist, has shaped a distinguished career spanning decades.
At the age of 12, Buyse began flute studies with David Berman of Ithaca College, later advancing her skills at the Eastman School of Music under Joseph Mariano. Further honing her craft in France, she studied with Michel Debost, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Marcel Moyse.
In 1983, Seiji Ozawa appointed her as the assistant principal flutist of the Boston Symphony and principal flutist of the Boston Pops.
Shifting her focus to teaching in 1993, Buyse has taught at institutions such as the New England Conservatory and the University of Michigan. She was the Mullen Professor of Flute at Rice University for 26 years, and was honored with the National Flute Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
