Introduction

In this lesson, Sean Mulholland gives an overview of the course and provides general advice on structuring time in and out of the practice room for optimal learning.

Memory and Encoding

This lesson explores how memory encoding impacts musical learning and performance. Using the "Levels of Processing" framework, the course covers the difference between shallow (maintenance) and deep (elaborative) rehearsal. Topics include working memory limitations, chunking techniques, semantic encoding, and making meaningful connections within music. The course also explores distributed rehearsal techniques to improve long-term learning. By applying these principles, musicians can make practice more efficient, enjoyable, and effective

Interpretation

Building on memory encoding techniques, this lesson explores strategies for crafting a compelling interpretation. Learn the importance of active listening—studying recordings and performances to enhance semantic and elaborative encoding. The lesson explores connections outside of music with the “Design It Twice” approach, encouraging experimentation with different phrasing, dynamics, and articulations. Also covered are tools and techniques for musical expression, such as singing through phrases to internalize musicality beyond technical execution. These techniques will help deepen artistic understanding and create more expressive performances.

Recall

In this lesson, the focus is on recall as a vital part of performance preparation. Rather than relying solely on repetition, recall-based practice strengthens long-term memory and provides a clearer picture of true retention. Strategies include starting each session by recalling previous work, creating structural "landmarks" in pieces to aid retrieval, and balancing free and cued recall. Mock performances are introduced as a powerful tool to simulate real performance conditions, reinforcing memory in the intended retrieval environment. By incorporating recall into practice, performances become more secure, confident, and resilient under pressure.
