Introduction

Legato is one of the most-discussed skills a singer can encounter. Join baritone Michael Sumuel as he offers tips and tricks to navigating this incredibly important vocal skill.

What is Legato?

Smooth, connected legato is a crucial skill for all singers. In this video, baritone Michael Sumuel guides you through a series of stepwise exercises featuring lip trills and vowels to help even out transitions between notes and vocal registers.

Moving Through Registers

Mastery of legato means ironing out transitions throughout all registers of the voice. Baritone Michael Sumuel shares his insights on stepwise, modulating exercises that will smooth out every corner of your vocal range.

Connecting Larger Intervals

Legato over leaps and large intervals is a unique challenge, and baritone Michael Sumuel offers a series of progressive exercises including "yawns" across both ascending and descending passages.

Maintaining Legato Through Consonants

Adding consonants makes legato considerably more difficult. Join baritone Michael Sumuel as he shares his favorite exercise for legato consonants: "bella signora," which covers the range of a 10th and includes many consonant-vowel transitions to massage.

Varying Rhythm and Vowels

In music, varied rhythm and vowels often form obstacles to beautiful legato. Baritone Michael Sumuel shares his favorite exercises and technical tips for overcoming these diverse obstacles.
