Villa-Lobos
Etude No. 4
Taught by renowned guitaristÂ
Gian Marco Ciampa
In his first lesson for tonebase, Gian Marco Ciampa teaches his favorite of the twelve etudes by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Etude No. 4. Gian Marco begins by introducing the piece and discussing Villa-Lobos's inspiration for this work: the cello. To mimic the sustain of the bowed instrument, Villa-Lobos used repeated chords and long melodic lines. Therefore, the majority of Gian Marco's lesson revolves around bringing this cello-like effect to life using well-thought-out dynamics and careful phrasing of the harmonic passages. In addition to these musical ideas, Gian Marco also shares his technical approach to playing the endless string of repeated chords without excess tension.
