Pablo Garibay
In this course, Pablo Garibay discusses Manuel María Ponce’s Sonata III (1927), a three-movement work full of adventurous harmony, energetic melodies, and advanced technique. Garibay plays excerpts from all three movements, shares stylistic and technical advice, and contextualizes the work through Ponce’s relationship with its first performer, Andrés Segovia.
I. Allegro moderato
This first movement is in sonata form, though the exposition contains a series of variations on a primary theme. Each variation, or episode, has a unique character worth really getting into. Garibay discusses Ponce’s European aesthetic, maintaining legato, how to work on technical challenges, and much more.
II. Cancion, Andante
Garibay prioritizes the direction of the melody and the color when working on the second movement; it's a lied in ternary form. Play each passage as if it's a different section of the orchestra. Garibay again gives importance to legato playing throughout!
III. Allegro non troppo
Ponce's third movement is where he really develops his interest in Spanish music; a rousing rondo theme returns between fascinating and varied episodes.
