Introduction
Most guitarists practice scales the way they brush their teeth: daily, dutifully, without ever asking whether it is working. Then a fast run turns up in a piece, the fingers trip exactly where they always trip, and the scales get blamed for not delivering.
The scales were never the problem. The practice was.
Scales are not hard because they are fast. They are hard for three reasons, all visible long before tempo becomes an issue. The hand moves more than it needs to, each finger traveling too far from the string with nothing anchoring the position. Tone and timing collapse the moment you cross strings, however clean your single-string playing sounds. And the left-hand fingering you chose — often by accident — forces the right hand into mechanics it cannot execute evenly. Solve those three and speed shows up on its own. Chase speed first and you get tension.

1. What scales actually train
Quick answer: Scales train the timing and release of movement, not raw finger speed. Vladimir Gorbach frames scale practice as control practice, with speed as the by-product. This section covers the three root causes of messy scales, the play-relax-plant cycle, the coordination problem, and why every finger pair needs training — not just i and m.
Ask a room of guitarists what scales are for and most will say "speed." That answer is why so much scale practice fails. Vladimir Gorbach states the inversion in the opening seconds of On Scales: the purpose of practicing scales is not to practice speed at all.

His reasoning is anatomical. Your fingers already move fast; what nobody can do untrained is release a finger on demand, over and over. "We all have a natural ability to play fast," Gorbach says, "but it's timing that we need to learn — because fingers can flex very well and move this way, but relax the finger, especially on command, on demand." That is why his warm-up starts at 60 BPM, playing on every second beat: play, release everything, replant. Three phases, one note.
The second thing a scale trains is coordination between two hands doing completely different jobs. Ali Arango opens On Fast Scales by placing the technique honestly: it "may be not the most important one, but there's no doubt it's one of the most complicated, because of the high level of coordination we need to obtain." A scale is the only common exercise in which the left hand shifts position, the right hand crosses strings, and both must arrive on the same millisecond.
The third thing is finger-pair independence — and here most players quietly cheat. Artyom Dervoed's Exercise #4: Two-Finger Alternation points out that the right hand has six possible two-finger pairings and almost everyone develops one. He names m–a as the weakest, then makes the general case: "we need to develop all pairs of fingers in order to make our hand work properly… with any fingering we use." His vehicle is a chromatic fragment of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, climbing fret by fret through twelve positions.
Scott Tennant makes the same point from the other end in his Rest Stroke Exercises: "We need to talk about alternation because that's how we play passages." Everything you will ever play at speed reduces to two fingers taking turns cleanly.
So a scale trains timing and release, two-hand coordination, string crossing, position shifting and fretboard knowledge — five things at once. Speed is not on that list. It is what happens afterwards.
2. How scales are built
Quick answer: Every major scale is the same seven-step interval formula — whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half — applied from a different starting pitch. Bokyung Byun defines a scale simply as pitches ordered by ascending or descending motion. A scale is less mysterious than its reputation. Bokyung Byun defines it in one sentence in her Fretboard Geography course: scales are "a collection of pitches ordered in ascending or descending motion." What makes a scale major is the sequence of gaps between those pitches — whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. On the guitar a half step is one fret and a whole step is two, so the formula is countable on the fretboard.
Apply it from C and you get C major, no sharps or flats. Apply it from G and one note must move to preserve the pattern — which is where key signatures come from.
The trouble starts when you try to play it. Mircea Gogoncea demonstrates the theoretically correct version in his Guitar: Major Scale lesson — the formula walked up a single string, exactly as a pianist would think about it — then immediately dismisses it.

That gap between the theory and the instrument is the subject of the next section. 3. Fretboard geography
Quick answer: Fretboard geography is the study of how a scale is laid out across strings and positions rather than along one string. Mircea Gogoncea shows that guitar scale shapes transpose along the neck but not across it. This section covers transposable position shapes, the G–B tuning anomaly, entry patterns, and the fingering criterion that matters most.
The single-string scale is theoretically pure and practically useless. Real scales are distributed across three or more strings inside one hand position — which buys one enormous advantage and one irritating exception. The advantage, as Gogoncea puts it, is that "on the guitar, you can transpose anything up and down as necessary without changing the shape of your left hand."
Learn one major-scale shape and you have learned every major scale it can reach — down a fret for B major, up a fret for C sharp major, the relationship between your fingers unchanged. A pianist learns a different fingering for nearly every key. You do not.
The exception is the tuning. "Unfortunately, though, because of the way our instrument is tuned, the same does not apply to moving between strings," Gogoncea warns. Every pair of adjacent strings is a perfect fourth apart except the third and second — G to B — which is a major third, so any shape crossing that pair needs a one-fret correction. Bokyung Byun's Fretboard Geography course organizes the beginner fretboard around exactly this, in two families of one-octave patterns with the G–B shift built into the variants that need it.
That is where most scale articles stop — with a grid of shapes. It is the wrong place to stop, because a shape tells you where the notes are and nothing about whether the fingering works at tempo. Eduardo Inestal supplies the missing criterion in Scale Secrets and Finding Fingerings. A string change is positive when the crossing runs in the comfortable direction for the leading finger, and negative when it does not — a small mechanical stumble you will hear as a hesitation long before you can name it.

The part players miss: negative crossings are usually fixed with the left hand. Inestal's example is C major in second position, where taking G as a stopped note on the third string creates a negative change — and the open G makes it vanish. Same notes, completely different right hand.

4. The Segovia scales
Quick answer: The Segovia scales are a published set of 24 diatonic major and minor scales carrying Andrés Segovia's own fingerings, widely taught since 1953 and just as widely argued about. Adam Levin calls the collection an absolute gem; other teachers consider the fingerings impractical and use something else. This section covers what the set is, why it spread, and how players use it today.
Few books have shaped classical guitar practice as visibly, or drawn as much argument, as Segovia's Diatonic Major and Minor Scales — twenty-four scales, each with a fixed left-hand fingering, published as a daily technical routine rather than a theory primer. Segovia's own claim for the material is why it stuck. Belmin Okanovic repeats it at the start of Segovia Scales Routine: if he had only two hours a day to practice, Segovia said, he would spend all two hours on scales. Abel Carlevaro, in the same tradition, placed only diatonic scales in the first book of his technical series.
Adam Levin, surveying the method-book landscape in Teaching Methods, reaches the collection and drops the survey tone.

What the set gives you is coverage: every key, one consistent layout, the shifts already worked out — so you can stop making decisions and start practicing. What it does not give you is understanding, and that is where the modern reading has moved.
Okanovic learned Segovia's fingerings first, as a teenager, then went looking for alternatives out of curiosity. His conclusion is that a scale fingered five ways is five different technical problems, and that the point is the fretboard, not the scale: "all this is because we want to learn our fretboard better." His instruction is direct — create as many organized fingerings for a single scale as possible. In G major alone, the shift from second to seventh position can be placed on the fourth string, the fifth, the third or even the sixth, and each placement feels like a different exercise.
A guitarist who knows one fingering for G major has memorized a route; a guitarist who knows five has learned the territory. Segovia's book is the best available map — it is not the country.

5. The right-hand engine
Quick answer: The right hand is what makes a scale fast or messy — the left hand only decides which notes. Ali Arango teaches two distinct rest strokes and a fingering system built to avoid string crossing entirely. This section covers why the rest stroke works at all, i–m versus a–m–i, rest stroke versus picado, crossing avoidance, Kuropaczewski's caging exercises, and where the thumb belongs.
Every teacher here agrees the right hand is the bottleneck. They disagree about almost everything else, and each disagreement is a real fork in the road.
Start with why the rest stroke works at all. Marco Tamayo's On Essential Principles explains the mechanism through Newton's third law: a force in one direction always produces an equal and opposite one. Apoyar means to lean, and Tamayo means it literally — you lean the weight of a relaxed arm into the string, and the string above the one you are playing supplies an opposing force that balances the hand. Leaning, he is careful to add, is not tension. On that account the rest stroke is not one tone colour among several; it is where right-hand balance and relaxation begin, which is why almost every scale technique in this guide is built on top of it.
Then the stroke itself. Ali Arango distinguishes two rest strokes that most players treat as one. The "classic" rest stroke approaches from the air, touches the flesh, then follows through into the string — the way a drumstick meets a drumhead. It gives legato and directional phrasing, and its dynamics work like stick height: a soft note opens the finger less before it drops, a loud note opens it further. The picado, borrowed from flamenco, is the opposite — short, staccato, the hand's weight driven straight toward the soundboard and stopped at contact. Arango describes the sound as a chicken pecking. Both are apoyando; choosing between them is a musical decision, not a technical one.
Then the crossing problem. Arango's account of why string changes break down is purely anatomical: the middle finger is longer and sits closer to the basses, the index is shorter and closer to the trebles, and the hand is inclined. Cross in the unfavorable direction and the two fingers must trade places mid-scale. Flamenco players, whose hand sits further forward, cross fingers freely and never notice.
His solution, learned as a child in Cuba from maestro Antonio Alberto Rodriguez, is to design the fingering so the crossing never happens. Scales tend to fall into groups of three notes per string followed by groups of two. Descending from trebles to basses, start on the index and run every three-note group ring–middle–index — the hand's natural rotational direction, the same motion as tremolo. Ascending, start on the ring finger instead, and any residual crossing is confined to the index–middle pair.
Two fingers or three? Arango is candid about the trade-off: three fingers buy speed, because each gets longer before it must play again, but the sound is much harder to balance — irregular even for him if the nails are not matched. Matt Palmer builds his whole technique on the three-finger side of that argument. In Flawless A-M-I Scales the a–m–i pattern always travels toward the thumb, paired with a three-notes-per-string left hand so it never has to break. Standard two-octave fingerings do not fit; that is the price. What you get back is one motor pattern repeated everywhere, and a stroke Palmer calls the "power stroke" — between free and rest stroke, pushing the string toward the soundhole rather than across it.

The thumb is where the teachers openly split. Palmer tells students never to plant the thumb on the sixth string while playing scales on the trebles, because it changes the contour and approach angle of the fingers on every string. Łukasz Kuropaczewski does exactly that on purpose. In his Guitar Technique Booster he runs five scale methods, and the middle three are studies in constraint: anchor p on the sixth string and play the whole scale i–m while the hand stretches toward the trebles; let p follow one string below the playing fingers; or plant a one string above i–m as a fence, so the working fingers cannot flail. "If you only want to be in your comfort zone," he says, "then you will never play great." The fifth combines them — thumb below, a above, "the first and second fingers feel like it's inside the cage" — and it is his favorite scale exercise.
The two positions are less contradictory than they look: Palmer describes performance mechanics, Kuropaczewski training under load. Anchoring the thumb is a bad habit and an excellent exercise.

6. Building speed
Quick answer: Speed is built by widening the gap between what you can control and what the music demands, not by pushing the metronome. Vladimir Gorbach works from 60 to 140 BPM while multiplying notes per beat. This section covers the metronome ladder, three practice methods, fragment drilling, speed bursts, and the tempo that actually covers the repertoire.
There is a version of speed practice that consists of nudging the metronome up until it falls apart, then repeating that tomorrow. It produces a plateau and a tense right hand.
Gorbach's ladder changes note density, not just tempo. In On Scales he runs the scale at one note per beat at 60, 80 and 100 BPM — four passes at each — with attention on the release between notes rather than on dynamics. Then back to 60 and up again at two notes per beat. Then triplets, 60 to 100. Then four notes per beat, at which point, he says, "you are entering the expert level of practicing scales." From there the jumps get bigger: 116, 126, 140 — where four notes per click is 560 notes a minute. Each rung is a different coordination problem, and you never stay long enough on one to build tension.
Inestal supplies three methods for making a specific scale reliable. In How to Practice Advanced Scales he starts with divide and conquer: never practice both hands together until each owns its part. Right hand alone on the strings, no left-hand pressure, to settle which finger starts and confirm every crossing is positive. Left hand alone, to analyze the shifts and the guide finger. Only then glue them. Most "difficult" passages are two easy things practiced at once, so you never hear which is failing. His second, practice by addition, builds the scale one note at a time — play note one, add note two, add note three — forcing attention onto each note's location before it disappears into a motion pattern. His third, practice by substitution, is a rolling window: notes 1-2-3-4, then 2-3-4-5, then 3-4-5-6, which trains the middle of the scale as hard as the start. Underneath all three: "try to be as lazy as possible while playing. That means try to move your finger as less as possible."
Arango drills by fragment, not by run. He breaks a long scale at the upbeat, locks each group in at tempo, then combines — groups of four, then eight, then the whole run.

That last clause is the part people skip: a loop practiced flatly teaches the hand to play flatly.
Kuropaczewski gives the protocol and, more usefully, the ceiling. Finish your slow prepared practice, then climb — 60, 65, 70, 75 — until you hit the border of your possibilities. Write that number down, return to slow preparation, and try again next week; he guarantees five to ten metronome points. Then he removes the anxiety underneath the exercise: "if you can play 16th notes in 130, 140 per quarter, that's all you need to be able to do. You don't have to really be able to play faster than that to play 95% of the repertoire." His performance rule follows — to be comfortable at 130 you should be able to play 140. "Never play on the edge of your possibilities, always a little bit below."
Gorbach adds two accelerators once the pattern is secure. Dotted rhythms turn each pair of notes into a burst-and-recover cycle, provided you take enough time between pairs. Speed bursts — three notes at maximum velocity on one string, a full rest, then again from a different starting finger — train the nervous system to recruit speed before the muscles tighten. His verdict on the timeline is the least fashionable thing in this guide: "let your body decide when you will be able to play fast."

7. Making scales musical — and a routine that sticks
Quick answer: A scale practiced as a phrase improves faster than a scale practiced as a drill. Łukasz Kuropaczewski treats every scale as musical material rather than a speed test. This section covers phrasing inside scales, why speed is a tool rather than a goal, and a realistic weekly routine you will actually keep.
The fastest way to make scale practice stop working is to make it mechanical. Kuropaczewski, who has run the same routine since 2003, refuses the word.

Approached musically rather than strictly technically, he says, a scale becomes easier to play. That is not a slogan but a mechanical observation: shaping a line forces you to control intensity note by note — exactly the skill that stops a fast run turning into a blur.
Inestal arrives at the same place from the philosophical direction, in the most substantive moment of his scale course: "we have always to serve music. It's not about us. It's about the music… It's a tool in order to play the music."
Speed, in other words, is a resource to deploy when the score asks for it — not an achievement to accumulate. If another guitarist plays faster than you, your strengths may simply fit different repertoire.
Now the routine, which is where most good intentions die. Gorbach's prescription is deliberately small: five minutes for the setup — single-finger play-relax-plant on individual strings — then ten to fifteen minutes on the scale progression, every other day. Not daily. Not an hour. "But make sure you do it regularly." Okanovic's is the fuller version, for players who want a technical session rather than a warm-up: C major through E major with their relative minors, in quarter notes, then eighths, triplets, sixteenths, cycling the right-hand pairing through i–m, i–a and m–a and alternating apoyando with tirando. His tempo targets are 60, 80 and 120 BPM — 60 for tone, 80 for momentum, 120 to make sixteenths a genuine problem.
Bored of running the same scale up and down? That is a practice-design problem, not a discipline problem, and three ways to turn any scale into a musical game will fix it without lowering the standard.
The payoff runs well past technique: the player who has fingered one scale five ways stops reading the fretboard as a diagram and starts hearing it as a place — which is where sight-reading, memorization and everything else begin.

How long should I practice scales each day?
Less than you think, and less often. Vladimir Gorbach recommends five minutes on the relaxation setup plus ten to fifteen minutes of scales, every other day rather than daily — his emphasis is on regularity, not volume. Belmin Okanovic's full Segovia routine runs closer to forty-five minutes, but that is a technical session, not a warm-up. Pick one and protect it.
Are the Segovia scales still worth practicing?
Yes, but not as gospel. Adam Levin calls the collection an absolute gem and a one-stop shop for scale practice, and its coverage is unmatched — every key, consistent layout, shifts already solved. The qualification comes from Belmin Okanovic, who learned Segovia's fingerings first and then built alternatives. Use the book as a map of the fretboard, not the only route across it.
Should I use i-m or a-m-i for fast scales?
Use i–m as your default and learn a–m–i as a second system. Ali Arango is direct about the trade-off: three fingers give more attainable speed because each gets longer to recover, but the sound is much harder to balance — irregular even for him when nails are uneven. Matt Palmer's three-note-per-string system makes a–m–i work by removing crossings from the pattern entirely.
Rest stroke or free stroke for scales?
Both — Ali Arango switches between them mid-scale on purpose. Rest stroke gives the volume fast passages need; free stroke lets a scale taper into an arpeggio without a seam. Arango uses a free-to-rest transition to build a crescendo and the reverse for a decrescendo. Eduardo Inestal's daily rule is simpler: run every scale exercise both apoyando and tirando, because the motion is identical and only the ending differs.
Why do my scales fall apart when I change strings?
Because the crossing is mechanically different, not because you are careless. Ali Arango's explanation is anatomical: the middle finger is longer and sits nearer the basses, the index shorter and nearer the trebles, and the hand is inclined — so crossing in the unfavorable direction forces the two fingers to trade places mid-run. Eduardo Inestal calls that a negative string change, and the fix is usually in the left hand: refinger so the crossings run the comfortable way.
How fast do I actually need to play?
Slower than you fear. Łukasz Kuropaczewski's ceiling is sixteenth notes at 130 to 140 to the quarter — that, he says, covers 95% of the classical guitar repertoire, and anything faster is a freedom rather than a requirement. He adds one margin: to be comfortable at 130 you should be able to reach 140, because you should never perform at the edge of your possibilities.
Should I anchor my thumb on the sixth string while playing scales?
Not in performance — but yes as an exercise, and the teachers genuinely disagree. Matt Palmer discourages it outright, because planting the thumb on the sixth string while playing on the trebles changes the contour and approach angle of every finger. Łukasz Kuropaczewski anchors it deliberately, precisely because the stretch is uncomfortable and repertoire demands that shape whenever a fast line sits above a bass. Train it; do not habituate it.
Do I need to know theory to practice scales?
No, but you will practice better if you do. You can drill a shape without knowing why it is a shape, and plenty do for years. Knowing the whole-and-half-step formula tells you why a fingering breaks across the G and B strings, why some keys sit better on the guitar, and which chords belong to the scale you are playing. Bokyung Byun's habit is the cheapest fix: say the pitch names aloud while you play.
