Course Syllabus

Etude No. 2, Op. 60

Interpreting a piece of music benefits from a deeper understanding of its harmony and structure. There are many things a performer can do to deliberately capture the audience's attention, even with a simple piece. In this lesson, Tengyue Zhang presents some of his ideas on preparing a convincing performance using Matteo Carcassi's Etude No. 2, Op. 60 as a model.

Etude No. 3, Op. 60

Matteo Carcassi's Etude No. 3 poses a few issues with left-hand legato. Some of the original fingerings make for awkward transitions. Tengyue Zhang has a few recommendations on how to perform this piece to achieve a smooth connection between shifts and bring life into this Beethoven-like piece.

Etude No. 4, Op. 60

Guitar virtuoso Tengyue Zhang teaches another etude by Matteo Carcassi. In his fourth etude, Carcassi explores the execution of slurs while holding a variety of chord shapes with the left hand. These fixed fingers pose a perfect challenge for working on slurs and developing legato phrasing.
