's Full Testimonial

My name is Miles Martin. I am an amateur hobbyist pianist, and I'm here to tell you how much I love tonebase and what it is that I love about it. So when I first started investigating the platform, I found myself going to the videos on the more advanced music. And this isn't necessarily music that I'm going to play, because I was a very late starter. You know, I don't really have professional aspirations. I only have so much time to practice. So I'm not really going to play Chopin’s Barcarolle anytime soon. But that doesn't mean that it's not incredibly interesting for me to hear Garrick Ohlsson talk about it, because there's a huge value to getting to see how a world-class musician approaches a piece of music like that. What are they thinking about in performance? What are the details that are most challenging for them, and how do they get over those challenges? I mean, this is all information that can be taken really into music at any level. Now, the flip side of that is that as I dug a little bit further into the platform, I realized that tonebase actually takes that same level of thought and care and attention that they put into this material about their more difficult music — and they apply all of that to easier music, as well. So even music that's more playable for somebody like me, like say Schumann’s Album for the Young, they have content on that, that takes that music seriously, and teaches it like it's beautiful music. Which it is! I mean, I think for better or worse, a lot of student pianists unfortunately think about easier or earlier music as a barrier that has to be overcome in order to then get to the more difficult music. And I really think this is a very, very bad way to think about this music, and tonebase does not make that mistake. tonebase takes his music incredibly seriously. So I guess if I had to summarize it, I would say that my favorite thing about tonebase is that it's incredibly democratizing, because it's taking this kind of conservatory-level thinking that maybe not all amateur pianists like me have access to, and it's not only bringing it down to make it useful for people who are learning easier music — it's also just in general making it accessible to people who might not be able to afford the number of piano lessons it takes to get there. I mean, it's really no secret that, you know, piano can be a little bit elitist. There's only so many people who can make it to the top, and those people usually require a lot of resources and support and opportunity in order to make it there on top of their hard work. But tonebase really helps break down some of those barriers, because it brings that thinking and spreads it out, and kind of gives it to everybody at a price that is really much more reasonable than it would be to pay for a huge number of lessons for many, many years. Thank you tonebase! I really, really, really love what you guys do. You guys are making a really, really, really great product here, and it's one that I'm absolutely happy to support.

"I don't regret for a minute having spent the money on the membership. There's something for every musician on tonebase – I recommend you give it a try."
