I think as pianists, most of us are not professional pianists who are concertizing. And especially with Covid, there has been somewhat of a disconnect between our personal world and being able to share that with others and find some commonality.

With social media, there are so many possibilities. And it’s not just about forums, there’s been forums where you can go and talk with other people. But tonebase is particularly exciting because it brings teaching, it brings interviews, it brings a whole community of people who are excited about music together. The activities from joint sight reading and live sessions really brings a whole new dimension to the world of piano. And I can’t say enough about the amazing talent I’ve seen on tonebase from Garrick Ohlsson and Emanuel Ax and dozens and dozens of others. And just from the motivational factor alone, I would highly recommend anyone to sign up to tonebase, check it out.

Even Garrick Ohlsson talks about the interviews that others have had, the interesting insights and comments that other pianists have had on tonebase. So if he can find value in it, so can we.

And I can’t say enough about how effective it’s been to help me with my own musicianship. Being able to hear — I really believe that you should have multiple people that you tune into, multiple teachers. Because you can get insight from different pianists with different backgrounds, and that’s what tonebase offers. It offers insight not just into “how do you play this piece?” which is very valuable. But it also offers insight into “how do you put yourself into the piece? How do you really make something sound musical and individual, and how do you find enjoyment?” Well part of it is you need to share that music with others, and tonebase allows you to do so.
