Sor's Study in B minor, phrase by phrase

Sor's "Moonlight" study, taught by Jakob Wagner one phrase at a time. Set up a right-hand pattern that runs on its own, let the melody sing above a softer arpeggio, and shape each of the six phrases into its cadence.

Who this Track is for

For Guitarists tired of practicing in circles

This Track isn't for everyone — and that's the point. It's a focused path for one piece, one player.

You can already play — but you practice in circles, never finishing a piece

You want one real piece, learned properly, from first note to last

You're done piecing together random videos and guessing what's next

What you'll learn · the path

Your path through Sor's Study in B minor, phrase by phrase

Each stop is one section of the piece. Open it at your instrument and everything you need is already there.

01

Establishing the Pattern (Bars 1–8)

Set up the right-hand pattern that carries the whole piece, with the a-finger resting on the first string and the thumb resting after every bass note. Then anchor the 3rd finger on F-sharp, feel the swing between B minor and F-sharp major, and shape the crescendo into the half cadence.

02

Voicing and the First Real Silence (Bars 9–16)

FREE – TRY IT

Guide the shifts into the deceptive cadence and play its G major chord softly. Then learn the melody on its own, add the chord shapes and the accompaniment back underneath it, and end the phrase in complete silence.

03

The Pendulum Without the Barre (Bars 17–24)

FREE – TRY IT

The tonic–dominant pendulum returns without a barre, with the 3rd finger as your anchor. Slide the 1st finger up and straight back in bar 21, then ease off into F-sharp major and stop the sound cleanly.

04

The Circle of Fifths (Bars 25–32)

Learn the circle-of-fifths sequence as block chords before you arpeggiate it, and stop the bass notes with the thumb so they don't ring over. Then guide the 1st finger into the Neapolitan and diminished chords and follow the chromatic bass into the cadence.

05

The Quiet Build-Up (Bars 33–40)

The opening returns, so you bring back everything from the first section. Then free the 1st finger for the barre in bar 40 and feel the syncopated bass that builds toward the final phrase.

06

The Climax and Close (Bars 41–48)

Map the final phrase as eight block chords first, then play them as written, with a guide finger into each new position and a ringing campanella on the G major chord. Step the dynamics down bar by bar into the final B minor.

07

Playing Through the Whole Piece (Bars 1–48)

Learn where to pause between phrases and where to keep moving, connect bar 40 straight into bar 41, then play the whole study from the first bar to the last.
